about
Working primarily with charcoal on canvas, Bakjyng’s (Bak-Joo-Young) practice is defined by energetic mark-making: creating compositions charged with high contrast, reminiscent of Chiaroscuro, manga art, and the elegance of traditional Eastern painting. Drawing inspiration from both Eastern and Western art traditions, including modern masters, Bakjyng’s works inhabit a space where the past and present converge to form a distinct, personalized visual language.
Through his evocative use of abstraction and figuration, Bakjyng explores themes of dreamscapes, liminality, and dualities—light and dark, beauty and grotesque. His art recontextualizes landscapes as both physical spaces to enter and inner environments to navigate, offering viewers a spectral perspective that bridges reality and the subconscious. The resulting works are dreamlike, oscillating between tranquil serenity and haunting surrealism, inviting reflection on the emotional and symbolic layers of existence.
Bakjyng’s creative process reveals itself as a collage of imagery and mark-making, gradually transforming from abstraction into recognizable forms. His pieces evoke a sense of floating between worlds, offering a refuge from modern-day chaos while simultaneously confronting it through introspection and symbolism.
Bakjyng holds a BFA in Painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) and currently resides in Seoul, South Korea.
